How to Calculate Percentages
There are several ways to calculate percentages:
- What is X% of Y? Multiply Y by X and divide by 100. Example: 20% of 100 = (100 × 20) ÷ 100 = 20
- X is what percent of Y? Divide X by Y and multiply by 100. Example: 25 is what % of 100 = (25 ÷ 100) × 100 = 25%
- Percentage change: Subtract original from new, divide by original, multiply by 100. Example: 50 to 75 = ((75 - 50) ÷ 50) × 100 = 50% increase
- Increase/Decrease: Add or subtract the percentage of the original value. Example: 100 increased by 20% = 100 + (100 × 0.20) = 120
